Studying Picture Storybooks.

Discussion ideas

The Cover: purpose (to advertise); what objects are shown?

Size and position of character: can we predict what the book might be about?

Colour: do the colours used support this prediction?

Objects on the back cover and the blurb: does this support the prediction?

End papers: what are the predominant colours? Does the story start and end here?

Setting: from the cover and / or endpapers is the setting obvious?

Title page and verso: purpose (to inform, author, title, publisher)

Title: biggest font on the page; position at top

Author and illustrator: next biggest font

Publisher: usually the smallest font at the bottom of the page.

Object on title page: usually main character or significant scene from the story.

Now read the story!
