Students will collect data about their pets in their Technology class, the year level, locally and then beyond the school to be utilised as a theme for a collaborative project.

Curriculum guidelines

Insert CSF 2 guidelines and learning outcomes for each state.

Collaborative projects in Technology facilitate activities that:

  • relate learning to real world situations
  • provide access to a wider range and volume of data.
  • enable students to work in teams that extend beyond the classroom walls
  • provide opportunities for cross curriculum activities where Technology supports learning in other curriculum areas.

Technology CSF Level 2,4

  • Acquire data and produce information products
  • Assesses suitability of data sources - explains presentation features.
  • Prepares designs and justify preferred options and approaches.
  • Produces information to design specifications.
  • Justifies the suitability of his/her products and suggest changes.

Teachers Guide

  • Overview

Students will be introduced to a range of information gathering processes and communication skills using the computer and Internet.

Students will begin with collecting the data, devising a program to analyse the data and finally present the data for a variety of audiences. The theme will be Pets.

  • Objectives

Students will work individually and in groups to be able to devise procedures and processes for collecting and collating data.

Student will be able to develop skills in Interpreting data and increase their writing ability by composing articles for electronic publishing

Students will be able to develop communication skills using the computer and the Internet utilising electronic publishing.

Students will be able to work collaboratively to create a website to present the results of their investigations.

  • Time required

Time: 10 periods X 50 minutes. This includes discussion , research, collating data, evaluating data, writing reports, layout and web design to present data for a variety of audiences.

  • Resources required

Specialist Resource, Materials and Equipment

  • Computer Lab or access to computer for each group
  • Reference books :pets
  • Digital/ Camera for taking photos of pets
  • Scanner for scanning in images- drawings, photos, paintings of pets.
  • Storage:Floppy, zip or harddisk for saving work.

Software:

Word processing program – keying in data after research

  • database program – keying in data into fields and querying database
  • desktop publishing program – design and layout of heading, text and images
  • web publishing program to converting data into a website
  • email software to communicate locally and globally on pets theme photo editing program for cropping of photos and presentation and finishing.

Materials and Equipment

  • Writing and drawing materials
  • Work book for problem solving, designing and organisation

  • Procedures
  • Lesson One:

Communication and Information past and present.

Discussion of Topic – Student will be introduced to the purposes of Information and Communications technology. Students will be alerted to how information was used and disseminated in the past and the current means of communication and acquiring information.

Students will devise a comparative chart to show the difference between the two approaches past and present. This can be presented in a variety of ways: drawing, slide show – Powerpoint, Hyperstudio or Kid Pix. (These programs will be hyperlinked with a lesson to indicate sample lesson outcomes with specific programs)

Discussion of Theme: Pets. Students will be asked to create a list indicating their favourite pets. These will be documented in a database to show type of pet, breed, name, tricks the pets, most lovable characteristic, the funniest incident that they remember about their pet.

To collect enough data for analysis and reporting students will email students from the same year level doing the same topic. Students may also go beyond this to other classes, other year levels, school community or another school. Obviously this will require work on behalf of the teacher to arrange some of this.

Lesson Two: Students are to use a database program which requires the knowledge of tables, queries, forms and reports. Student will enter the following data about their pets:

Type of animal, breed of animal, name of animal, favourite trick of animal, special features, age of animal.

Students will then consider a variety of ways of presenting data.- The teacher will introduce multimedia, (hyperlink) such as Powerpoint or Hyperstudio, desktop publishing (hyperlink) programs such as MS Publisher, Creative Artist and photoediting (hyperlink) programs such as Paintshop Pro and web publishing (hyperlink) such as Dreamweaver .

Students- they will work in groups to enable support in learning techniques in each specific software packages.

Lesson Three: Students will be asked to design an outline of their pet and type in a story or poem about their pet. These can be presented to the class in a variety of ways – static display, on-line display, publishing in the schools’ newsletter or electronic noticeboard.
