What is federation?

Australia became a nation in 1901. The word federation means joining together. Up until 1901 Australia was comprised of 6 separate colonies and each belonged to the British Empire. There were many interesting events that took place before 1901, and they led to Australia becoming a Commonwealth. The colonies became states, each with their own parliament.

On 1st January 1901 the colonies joined together to form a nation, and a constitution was developed which explained how the national system of government would work. The federal government was then able to make laws about things that affected Australia as a whole and these laws have precedence over any state laws.

Celebrations for the Centenary of Federation throughout 2001 are a great opportunity to develop an understanding of how our nation was formed.
