"Venetian Painting in the Early Renaissance" offers seven paintings
from the last quarter century of the 1400s. In the mid-1400s,
Venice was the most powerful city in Italy but by the end of the
fifteenth century the city's fortunes had begun to change.
Venetian artists nevertheless maintained their prestige, legendary
splendor, & international reputation. Grounding their art in the
senses, they appealed to the eye & the spirit through brilliant
color, glowing light, & the beauties of nature. (NGA)

"Giorgione & the High Renaissance in Venice" presents seven
paintings by this influential painter (1500-20) & others whose work
marks the beginning of the Venetian High Renaissance. Giorgione
introduced new subjects (mythological scenes & pastorals) & several
technical innovations. (NGA)

"Mannerism" offers seven Italian paintings covering 1520-40, the
period just after the popular High Renaissance. This period is
known for its emphasis on self-conscious artifice over realistic
depiction. (NGA)

"Titian & the Late Renaissance in Venice" features seven paintings
by Titian (Tiziano Vecellio), the preeminent artist among Venetian
painters during the 16th century. At the time (1540), Venice
reigned as one of the most powerful city-states in Europe, &
Venetian painters assumed a position of artistic supremacy in
Europe that they would occupy for the rest of the century. (NGA)

"Venetian Painting in the Later Sixteenth Century" shows seven
paintings by the three most important challengers to Titian's
dominance over Venetian art in the 16th century. (NGA)

"Manet's The Dead Toreador & The Bullfight" explores why the
artist, stung by critical comments in 1864, cut his painting
"Incident in a Bullfight" in two & then painted The Dead Toreador &
The Bullfight on the resulting two canvasses. Using x-rays &
intensive scientific analysis of the two existing paintings,
historians have discovered fascinating connections between these
seemingly unrelated works. (NGA)

"Romantics & Realists" compares & contrasts the romantic & realists
schools through seven French paintings (1812-1875). The romantic
movement, according to poet Charles Baudelaire, was "a manner of
feeling." The realists, in the next generation, were guided by
observation & the idea that "painting is an essentially concrete art."

"American Impressionists of the Late 1800s & Early 1900s" offers
seven paintings that help show how the invention of collapsible tin
tubes to hold premixed oil paints (John Rand, 1841) freed the
artist to leave the studio & explore the subject matter first-hand.
The Americans built on the masterful work done by French
impressionists, but focused on different subjects. (NGA)

"Photographs of International Expositions" is a study & research
collection of images documenting European & American art &
architecture. Among its holdings, the Archives maintains a large
collection of photographs, albums, & postcard booklets from various
international expositions such as Philadelphia 1876, Paris 1889, &
Paris 1900. http://www.nga.gov/resources/expositions.htm

"Alfred Stieglitz: New Perspectives" is a multi-faceted project
which includes the Gallery's 1983 book, "Alfred Stieglitz:
Photographs & Writings" & a series of presentations. The multi-
year project will culminate in the publication of a scholarly
catalogue of the Gallery's collection of Stieglitz photographs & an
exhibition of the art of this seminal American photographer. (NGA)

"National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden" explains the works of
the art, the artists, the construction process, & the history of
this important new attraction on the National Mall. (NGA)
http://www.nga.gov/feature/sculptgarden/splash.htm

"Selected Photographs from the Collection" offers nine photographs
that celebrate some recent additions to the Gallery's growing
collection. These photos suggest that great photographers do not
simply record the world; they transform it. (NGA)

"Teacher Exchange: Curriculum Ideas" offers interdisciplinary
curriculum ideas created by teachers participating in the Gallery's
Teacher Institute. Topics range from mythology & interdisciplinary
learning, to renaissance art & long-distance learning, to visual
art & rural elementary schools, & more. (NGA)

"Teaching Resources Online" offers twenty-four studies & classroom
activities for some of the Gallery's most intriguing exhibitions.
Get lesson ideas for teaching Mary Cassatt's "Little Girl in a Blue
Armchair," or read a detailed explanation of the archetypal "action
painter" Jackson Pollock. (NGA)

"The Drawings of Annibale Carracci" is the first exhibition devoted
to the powerful & evocative drawings of Annibale Carracci (1560-1609).
On view at the Gallery through January 9, 2000. (NGA)

"The Golden Age of Chinese Archaeology" is a landmark exhibition on
view at the Gallery through January 2, 2000. It illustrates the
achievements of Chinese culture through the presentation of
masterpieces dating from the Neolithic Period through Five
Dynasties (5000 B.C. to A.D. 924). Many of these masterpieces were
discovered in the last twenty years & have not seen before in the
U.S. http://www.nga.gov/exhibitions/chbro_intro.htm
