Modern Australian Landscape Painting comprises eighteen key works drawn from the National Gallery of Victoria's Collection. Curator, Geoffrey Smith, has brought together recent acquisitions as well as more publicly celebrated modernist works, and has paired some paintings which have only been previously seen together at their original showing. 27 April to 4 June 2000 (ground level)
Groote Eylandt painted barks drawn from the Leonhard Adam Collection of International Indigenous Culture Curator: Bala Starr
The Leonhard Adam Collection includes objects from Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Asia, America and Africa. An important group of thirty-six painted barks from Groote Eylandt, collected in 1945 for an exhibition in Melbourne and given to The University in 1946, is one of the highlights of the Adam Collection. Seventeen painted barks drawn from this Collection are showcased in the gallery adjacent to Modern Australian Landscape Painting. The aim is to present a contemporary juxtaposition between Aboriginal art in the 1930s and the paintings in the Landscape exhibition. 27 April to 4 June 2000 (ground level)
