Art on Trial
Art on Trial - William Dobell and the 1944 Archibald Prize case.
Why was the award to Dobell's portrait of Joshua Smith challenged? What lies were told in court? What scurrilous legal tactics were employed? Should Dobell have been cited as a defendant at all? And why did he volunteer to go into the witness box? What is the truth about Australia's most famous portrait?
All is disclosed in the revolutionary re-enactment written and presented by Robert Smith; directed by Eugene Schlusser. Based on extensive new research, it makes enthralling real-life drama, highly pertinent to this crucial stage in our history.
Those making "appearances" include Dobell, Joshua Smith, Garfield Barwick, James S. MacDonald, Robert Gordon Menzies, Hal Missingham and judge in equity, Justice Roper.
A stirring courtroom drama appropriate to honour the 1999 centenary of Dobell's birth and the 2001 Centenary of Federation.
